Beja is a city with a long history and interesting culture that ranges from the Roman times. It is situated in the beautiful Alentejo area, 137 miles distant from Lisbon and it has approximately 23500 inhabitants. In Beja you will find many superb places to visit that demonstrate its rich cultural and historical heritage.

The city offers all the amenities for a wonderfull stay. It has plenty of traditional restaurants serving delicious food, great choice in accommodation and the surrounding landscape is perfect for cycling, hiking and other leisure activities.

Castro Verde

Castro Verde is a pretty village with about 8000 inhabitants located 45 km from Beja. It is situated in the middle of the golden plain of Alentejo and is surrounded by a relatively unexplored and totally unspoilt landscape. The traditional cuisine and lovely accommodations are a warm welcome at the end of a day in the saddle!

Castro Verde has many places of interest, including the Museum of Basilica Real de Nossa Sra. da Conceição, the Museum of Lucerna, the Museum of Rural Affairs. Other cultural buildings worth visiting are the Municipal Movie Theater and the Municipal Forum.

The village of Mértola’s existence can be traced back as far as the Roman invasions of the Iberian Peninsula. It is now home to 2800 people that live in and around the castle walls on the right bank of the Guadiana River. From the top of the village there are stunning views over white houses with red roofs, all the way to the green valley that ends up on the waters of the peaceful river.

The village of Mértola has always based its economy on agriculture and livestock, but more recently tourism is becoming an economic factory. Local monuments like the church and the castle still stand. They have interesting histories and both are well worth a visit. Perhaps you are thinking that a trip up a steep hill to the castle is a bit much at the end of a bike ride but the views are well worth the effort! In fact, on this cycle holiday in Portugal there will be some climbing involved, but we guarantee that the feeling of accomplishment, together with the typical Alentejo mouth-watering cuisine and wine plus the stunning views equals an amazing experience.

Alcoutim is home to just 900 people who have the pleasure of waking up each morning to stunning views of the beautiful landscapes overlooking the Guadiana river and beyond. This charming village is located at the northwest end of the Algarve region, on the western bank of the Guadiana River.

The history of Alcoutim goes back to Roman times and in some areas it is possible to find archaeological settlements from the Upper Palaeolithic period. The village is home a Castle, St. Antonio’s Chapel, the Ermida de São Domingos and the Alcoutim Church.

The road along the River Guadiana banks goes as far as Vila Real de St. António and is perfect for relaxing bike rides and other peaceful activities

The gastronomy of the region is based on pork and fish (this time from the river). You will find in Alcoutim, several good restaurants with fabulous food and great service that will aid you in recovering your stamina after your day of riding.

Vila Real de Santo António

Vila Real de St. António was founded in 1774 and was built on the order of the Marquis de Pombal. It is located at the mouth of the Guadiana River, and it has vast architectural heritage which nowadays plays host to tourism and commerce. This city is home to around 11.900 people.

The city offers many places of cultural interest, superb accommodations and great restaurants. It is a short 3 km bike ride from the lovely beach of Monte Gordo and its energetic atmosphere.

This is an excellent area in which to finish your cycle holiday tour. Its almost flat terrain and gorgeous sandy beaches make Vila Real de Santo António and Monte Gordo the best place to recover all the energy that you have used on your wonderful cycle tour!

With an average 330 days of sunshine per year and a lovely mild climate, this city is a popular tourist destination that leaves you with fond memories.

Lisbon is a vibrant city where several cultures and religions have created more than 800 years of interesting history. A city that has blended perfectly to create an exciting and cosmopolitan atmosphere. It is a city of contrasts, where the modern and the classic go hand in hand, and its magical atmosphere is impossible to resist.

After a devastating earthquake in 1755, the city was rebuilt by Marquês de Pombal with a very specific architectural style that can still be seen in the entire city centre.

Lisbon has a multitude of things to see and places to visit, and it is a capital that doesn’t stop by day or night. The atmosphere here is unforgettable!

All accommodation will be in comfortable B&Bs carefully chosen by us. Standard accommodation is for 2 people in a double room, but single travelers who pay a supplement get a room of their own. For larger groups we may choose lodgings for more than 2 people.

We are able to recommend various restaurants to our guests for lunch and dinner. We also try to organize our tours in such a way that the lunch and dinner times occur in places with as many options as possible. Most people choose to eat together as a group, but it is not compulsory and if you wish to eat separately this is perfectly fine.

For 7€ you can eat a snack and have a drink, but for a more complete meal you will spend on average around 10 to 15€. For dinner you will need 10 to 25€ depending on the meal and location.
