Stunning Sri Lanka!

Sri Lanka is a country island of approximately 20 million people in the Indian Ocean. It was known as Ceylon until 1972, and Sri Lanka has maritime borders with India to the northwest and the Maldives to the southwest.

Sri Lanka has a well documented history that spans over 3000 years, and its location and deep harbours made it of strategic importance from the time of the ancient Silk Road through to World War II. It is a diverse country that is home to many religions, ethnicities and languages. Sri Lanka has a rich Buddhist heritage, and the first known Buddhist writings were composed on the island. Even today almost 99% of Sri Lakans claim that religion is an important part of their daily lives.

The island consists mostly of flat-to-rolling coastal plains, with mountains rising only in the south-central part. The climate is tropical and warm, and average yearly temperature ranges from 28 °C to 31 °C during the day and night temperatures may vary by 14 °C to 18 °C.

There are 103 rivers in Sri Lanka, and these waterways give rise to 51 natural waterfalls of 10 meters or more. Sri Lanka’s stunning coastline is 1,585 km long and the coastline and adjacent waters support marine ecosystems such as fringing coral reefs and estuarine seagrasses. Sri Lanka also contains 45 estuaries and 40 lagoons too. The island is rich with minerals and the existence of Petroleum in the Gulf of Mannar has also been confirmed and extraction attempts are underway.

Flora and fauna

Although the country is relatively small in size, it has the highest biodiversity density in Asia. Sri Lanka has declared 24 wildlife reserves, which are home to a wide range of native species such as Asian elephants, leopards, sloth bears, the unique small loris, a variety of deer, the purple-faced langur, the endangered wild boar, porcupines and anteaters.

Flowering acacias grow in abundance on the dry Jaffna Peninsula. Among the trees of the dry-land forests are valuable species such as satinwood, ebony, ironwood, mahogany and teak. The wet zone is a tropical evergreen forest with tall trees, broad foliage, and a dense undergrowth of vines and creepers. Subtropical evergreen forests resembling those of temperate climates flourish in the higher altitudes.

The Yala National Park in the southeast protects herds of elephant, deer, and peacocks whilst The Wilpattu National Park in the northwest preserves the habitats of many water birds, such as storks, pelicans, ibis, and spoonbills. The Minneriya National park is an important source of water for numerous elephants inhabiting the surrounding forests. The Park also encompasses a range of micro-habitats which, include classic dry zone tropical monsoonal evergreen forest, thick stands of giant bamboo, hilly pastures and grasslands.

Sri Lanka is also home to over 250 types of resident birds and it has declared several bird sanctuaries.

Responsible and Eco friendly travel

This is a request more than a fact or advice. Sri Lanka is a very beautiful and natural place. Because of this we request that all tourists be responsible when using facilities.

Water is one of the most essential resources in Sri Lanka as it is used widely for farming and producing electricity. As a part of our water conservation request you could consider the following while you are enjoying your holiday.

  • Consider quick baths.
  • Refrain leaving the tap open while brushing teeth or shaving
  • Refrain throwing away drinking water

Use your waste considering the environment and we recommend using re-usable bags for shopping. Electricity, since it is produced by water, is also important not to waste. Please do not leave on lights or TV/radio while you are out and keep the Air Conditioning running only while you are in the room.

Wildlife conservation is a priority, especially the most endangered species. Please consider this when you go shopping and refrain from buying anything made out of an endangered species. Please also consider the sustainability and refrain from buying anything that is seemingly made in an unsustainable manner.

We advise that you strongly refrain from purchasing ancient artifacts. If you have any doubts please consult your guide.
